There's a nice article on the redesign of the main site.

Yeah, Sitepoint rolled back the new design and with it, the new posts/articles they had written. Don't worry, it will reappear at some point.

It's funny how comforting familiarity is. I bet if I was jailed for a long amount of time I could put my mind at ease (after a long while) by listening to the same radio channel and following the same routine each day.

It's still around (http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/search.php) @HAWK ; can a link to the Advanced Search be placed somewhere near to the search box?

Yes, sorry guys. Temporary rollback but new site will be back shortly.

The main site redesign has been ongoing from a build point of view for about 6 weeks. Mark and Peter (designer) have been working through wireframes and treatments for maybe a month before that.

The forum refresh: Obviously we're talking talking about vBulletin so we're working within those constraints. We searched high and low till we found a prebuilt, commercial theme that complimented the new design. That also meant upgrading the vB core. Then we set about customizing and stripping back that theme over the last week.

As I said earlier, we were on a tight deadline to align with the main site relaunch (which ironically is currently the old design), but working with Hawk we decided it was solid enough to launch with.

The reference site was also part of that process. Hopefully I'll get to re-skin that one completely when we get the current stuff nailed down.

@Alex Sorry to hear the servers are playing up. Anyhow, I was wondering why the link to the forums on the new SitePoint isn't a great big button in the top menu.

Sorry about that - as per Alex's post, we had to roll back but hope to be back on track today once we kick the servers a bit.

It's here but you're right - we need a link. Noted.

It will be definitely be there in the main site nav. For the moment we're trying to measure where the biggest panics are: our kernels or sys admins.

Made a slight tweak to the quote style. No italics and a smidge bigger.

    Improvement?

I love the new skin guys! The forum actually looks like a forum now. Before the navigation was pretty wonky. Now it functions just like any other forum.

Yes, the main site—to which that link goes—is down for maintenance at the moment. (A redesign was launched yesterday, but it's down again due to server issues.) That link will be live again shortly, and it lands on a pretty cool new page.

You know it's not displaying the top of the screen properly on IE8, I take it? Unless this is some new avant-garde menu style, I think the blue vertical list on the right hand side of this should be something else:

I know, IE8 is getting on a bit, but it's an XP machine and no newer IE will load. I don't *like* Chrome, despite Googlemail insisting that I should. And I didn't like Firefox last time I used it, and it's not as if it's IE6. Also note that I'm on a mobile broadband connection, but that shouldn't matter - the missing image in top right doesn't show missing after a time-out due to a slow connection.

Reading the above it seems like we might be in an interim state here so ignore the above if you know about the issue.

I agree that, so long as XP is a force of reckon, IE8 should not b0rk. For those who find IE the best of available browsers, 8's it.

So far I am liking this new design. The greys actually help other stuff stand out, and avatars and signatures add colour nicely, instead of competing with orange and blue.

After much bare-chested server wrestling, I'm glad to report the new SitePoint.com is back online.

Assuming all our monitoring systems maintain their pretty little green graphs, and not the disturbing, gaudy red ones of last week, we'll be ironing out the last issues here (including the IE8 borkage).

Thanks for your patience everyone. We reckon the new site is worth it.

Will comments from the recent blog posts on SP be carried over to the new design? I've been getting a lot of notifications about new blog comments today, but there are no comments showing on those posts.

Cool. Any idea why new blog comments aren't showing up? I've received a ton of emails today saying there are new comments, but now new comments are showing up on the blog posts.
