    Organize past news

We are redesigning our site and I am really "scratching my head" about how to set up the news archive.
At the moment, the past news aren't displayed differently than the current news. It's like

    Title
    Posted by
    Content
    Links
    Comments

and I really don't like it since digging through it is, understandably, a mess.

A different approach would be to leave the current news how they are and display just the title for the past news in a list, but I don't think that would really be any better than the current design.

Of course, a search function will be in place, but sometimes, I like to just have a quick scan to look for something I might like and want to read. Checking a plain list of news titles is, well, boring, and it takes forever to scan for interesting news with the first approach, but I just can't figure out something that would work better.

Does someone have an idea on how to improve the news archive?

is the news archive database driven ? if yes, why not offer an option to the user: order by date/poster/title/etc ?

It's not really a matter of how to sort them, it's rather how to display them. One long list seems intimidating and boring to me, but having to wade through pages with 7 news per page is also not that nice to go through.

As I said before, there will be a search function in place, but that can't be the only way to get to past news. The two mentioned methods both have its (dis)advantages, but you could pay me and I couldn't up with something better.

how about a multi-column view, with titles and possible the first 50 or so characters of the actual news item in smallish font size, in two columns. or maybe a "view by month" ? just thoughts...
