Stereotypes may lead to more violence and I certainly don't deny it, but would a thread like this do much harm?

were-here - how can you critique sbdi's site without it having gone live yet (though you could critique the spelling on his holding page - unless he's changed it )
Wait til next week and then blow it out the water if you feel the need...

Wayne - People take deep pride in their cultures and their countries, I don't think that is a laughing matter. I think it is a thing that should be respected.
I am proud to be English, even more so to be British (since then I get to claim more things to be proud of - especially since the Scottish seem to have invented almost everything). But that doesn't mean that I take offence when someone takes the micky, I recognise the sillyness in England, there's a lot of it about, it gave the Monty Python team and the Goons all their material. It is of course different when someone has a bash meaning to diliberatly offend, I got aggravated in another thread when someone slagged off southeners and meant it, but I'm happy to have a tongue in cheek discussion about southern poofters vs northern twats, as long as it's only teasing.

I think being over sensitive to humour can be damaging and limits the spirit.

These stereotypes are "fed" to children and they begin to think that such and such is inferior or different because their African, English, Egyptian, Greek, or whatever. They base their opinions on people because they don't know any better. This can grow into intolerance and hatred if it causes pain in their own lives.
I don't think that it is the stereotypes that teach children that another culture is inferior, it is the parents who do it.

I'm not sure of the divide in this thread between who liked the joke and who didn't and who is from the US and who isn't. I think like most things it doesn't matter - it all depends on the individual.

I think that sbdi's site is going to be the best!

You don't know how anyoing it is that americans say that the USA is the best place to live all though Canada was rated the best place to live six years in a row with the UK in second and then the USA in third! Just last night I saw a US news show and it said "Is the USA really the best place to live?" of course the answer was Yes(that's wrong). It placed Canada in sixth and the UK in fifth? I support sbdi's site 100%! Great idea!

Thats what I think and I now the Americans are going to argue

    Damnyanks.com, need I say more?

Am I missing something, or is this site not for poking fun at the Americans? I think it is in bad taste if that if it is indeed meant for that purpose. I could poke fun at your countries all day long, but would never do so.

[Edited to apologize for a miscommunication if indeed I misunderstood your post, but only if you are not making a site to make fun of others of course!]

I think that is good. It's good that you think that you're own country is the best, whereever you are. The Netherlands have a better standard of living than the UK but I would still rather live here, and I'm sure the Dutch would rather live in the Netherlands than the UK. I'm sure whatever country you lived in - unless it was undergoing some severe upheaval, or drought, etc - you'd think you're country was the best to live in.

I lived in Germany for two years and it is a great country, but I always missed things like shop assistants putting the change into your hand as they do in England and not onto the counter as they do in Germany, silly little things like that, it is just nice to be in the culture that you grew up in. Horrah for every country!

But I still think it's OK to take the mick!

So why are you not complaining about how Hollywood stereotypes the English then W.Luke?

I think a lot of the British sense of humour is based on taking the mick, to us it doesn't mean anything and I believe it's cultural imperialism to complain about it from 3000 miles away. If you don't like the sound of us for gods sake do stay away.

I'm sure other countries are nice, but I prefer my current country. We all likely do - no shame in that.

Ho hum I have been fed stereotypes all my life. Do I believe them? Not at all. As you well know I live in Northern Ireland, and we aren't free from stereotyping either. My mother is a strong unionist, perhaps verging on the side of loyalism, and hates all the Irish. As I child, I was told how awful the Irish they are (but in much stronger words). Now I am not going to badmouth anybody, because truthfully I am afraid of being knee-capped. However the fact of the matter is that I have absolutely no problem with the Irish people in general (maybe a few politicians but that's all). They are a friendly bunch who like to drink (yippee). Just because my mother believes something doesn't mean I do. Once upon a time, I told her that one of my friends from Singapore was coming to visit me in N.I., and my mother said that if this girl came anywhere near our door she wouldn't be let in.

Methinks you should choose your words more carefully In this quote you effectively create a stereotype of a "gang" -"and we weren't a gang". Oh, so you weren't a gang, but some people are/were? Now I am not sure what this stereotype you are creating is, but you did clearly point out that you believed that "gangs" are something that are bad for society in general. So what do you think a gang is then, if it's not just a group of people?
