Your hosting provider most likely provides a way to "Backup your sites" and, perhaps, a way to also backup any associated databases.
Do you have access to a Control Panel (CPanel) for your hosting?

I'm also looking for a solution for this and would welcome any suggestions or recommendations.

Services I have seen are http://bqbackup.com/ and http://www.evbackup.com/. I'm not affiliated with either of those sites and have not used their services as of yet, however I would welcome opinions on them.

Your host would normally, but my idea would be buying a low end vps and using that to backup to, depending on how much space you need.

There is also vps providers out there dedicated to providing backup space a lot cheaper than amazon etc
