    Hi,

A friend of mine wants to put a video clip on his site. I'm not real familiar with setting something like this up. He has another friend who said he would make the clip for him, but his server would have to be able to play it.

My question is what does his server need to be able to play a video clip using Real Video?

    Thanks guy's!

    Howdy,

Technically any server should be able to play the RealVideo clip. As long as the MIME type for RV is set up and the host allows RealVideo files on the server (some don't due to bandwidth/CPU constraints) then the clip should play fine.

I highly advise asking your host if they support RV, and if they support HTTP streaming.

In the meantime I'll dig up the URLs through real.com to assist you in setting up the clip on the server.

    Cheers!

Thanks for the reply BC! I'll pass this information to my friend.

This would be great, seeing as I would be the one setting it up.

    Thanks again..

    Hi again Bob,

There are two ways of doing RealVideo : HTTP streaming and just downloading the file.

Here's a useful URL to get you streaming RealVideo (that is, you can view the video as it downloads, without much delay) :

    http://service5.real.com/solutions/RAP00623.HTM

And if you get completely confused, you might like to have a look at a couple of articles that some of my old Y!Geo friends, Keith and Bob, made :

    http://www.geocities.com/viennaonlin...bytes1100.html

They give instructions clearly, step-by-step, and if you run into any problems, you can always e-mail them (if they're not too busy) - tell them I sent you

The other way to view RV files is just to download the files without streaming (i.e. download the whole file before it begins to play) - in which case just FTP/upload the completed RV file to your server, then create an A HREF tag on your HTML page and play away!

    Hope this helps.
