How to retain web safe colors when changing image formats

I'm trying to convert an image from .psp to .jpg format and I keep losing my background color (#996600) when converting. I've tried several things, even changing the background color of the jpg then saving the file. Every time I try something my background color is changed slighly. I need my background color to remain the same so it blends in on my web site. I've ran into this problem in the past, however, I managed to fix it accidently.. :-)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Well with GIFs this is not an issue. Jpg however is. The reason being that Jpg compression is altering/tainting your solid colours. That's why Gifs are more used for those. Jpg compression sux for solid, flat coloured areas. Especially when you're applying medium to high level compression.

I don't use PSP myself so i'm afraid i'm at a loss to provide concise help here. Sorry. Hopefully an experienced PSP user will read this.
