It translates semi-english like code that developer's write (ASCII) into binary code that the computer can read (BIN). Take a look at your local .exe file in Notepad. It'll all be gibberish as opposed to gibberish written in semi-recognizable code.

well, yes it turns it into a language the computer can understand.

Try opening MozillaFirebird.exe and you'll see what I mean

    Edit:

Didn't see the last post, is vB broken and doesn't show the thread as if it had 3 pages if there is only one post on the last page ? (I've also seen this with 2 pages etc.)

Ah, I always thought giberish was just opening a file in the wrong program so it couldn't be read

I've also noticed vB messes up a lot with the page.

I downloaded it and did a bunch of surfing. It's slow and I didn't ask for a pop-up blocker. I'll stick with IE.

Hmm.. Never thought it was slow. Renders most pages in under a second for me.

It seems to "burp" a couple of times on any site with just a few graphics for me. I'm on an ok win2000 machine here at work at the moment. I'm not here to "slam" it, but I don't see any reason to use it right now as IE performs better for me.

The latest nightly seems quite a bit quicker than most of the builds I've tried. It's lightning fast compared to mozilla 1.4 and it's even as fast as (if not faster than) IE6 now.

I have been thinking about switching from Internet Explorer a bit lately, so I figured I would give this a try. I'll have to use it awhile to form a better opinion, but there are just a few things.

    - Is is possible to move the address and navigation bar aside the menu bar. I would prefer to have only one bar since my screen resolution is such that everything can fit on one line, thus making more room for the page.
    Edit:

    Nevermind, figured it out.

    - It doesn't seem to support alternative style sheets; I'd love to see more browsers support this (and sites)

I'll have to spend more time with it to see whether I like it or not.

Right-click on the toolbar buttons and hit Customize. Then you've got a drag-and-drop interface.

Download extensions (one location is http://texturizer.net/firebird/extensions.html). A couple should have a style sheet switcher. If you don't see it the MozillaZine http://www.mozillazine.org/forums/index.php forums, Extensions area has a new Developer extension which has it.

Go to http://www.texturizer.net/firebird/extensions.html and install the "Alternate Stylesheet Switcher". Then restart your browser, go to a site like zeldman.com that has alternate sheets, and click "View -> Use Style" in the main toolbar. You should then be greeted with a list of alternate styles for you to choose from.

Also, you seem to want a lot for someone used to IE .

Back on topic though -- I started using Firebird back when it was Phoenix 0.4. I liked it, and by 0.5 it was my default browser. I think that Firebird is the best browser out right now for Windows, period.

    Thanks!

I did figure out how to customize the toolbar, but I'm still left with an empty toolbar.
    Edit:

    Nevermind, I got it.
    /me was a bit impatient

Thanks for the links to the extensions, I'll have to check them outl ater.

    Couple of questions now :
    * How do I change so that when I click 'view source' it opens up in EditPlus but not this Mozilla source viewer ?
    * How do I change so that when I do mouse up (ctrl+t) It opens up the same site I am currently viewing ?

I had one other but I've forgot it now, maybe I'll post it sometime...

Don't think there's a way to do "view source" in a new program, though it may still be implimented.

As far as keyboard shortcuts, there's a list somewhere on the site. Don't have time to look it up now Ah, but there's also a "mouse gestures" extension where you can just click and drag the mouse to do simple functions like that.

I just upgraded to 1.4, it looks like Nutscrape, and no plugins work...I can't download a single one...I'm sticking with 0.6 'till the final build comes out.

I swear, this thing IS nutscrape. It's got ALL nutscrape icons on it.

    Nope. What does it do?

I'm afraid it'll block an ad I'll like.

It blocks any type of web content you don't want to see. You can block extensions or directories.

    ex.

    *.swf
    *.gif
    *.jpg

    OR

    */ads/*
    */banners/*

Once you customize it enough and find out the common ad directories places use it's awesome. There is also an option to either hide or remove the blocked content. It's so easy to use too!

    MUST TRY!!
    http://adblock.mozdev.org/

This feature along with the already functional built in pop-up blocker in firebird makes it the best browser ever!

But it doesn't keep you from downloading them. Just displaying. So there's a big blank spot? Hm... maybe I'd rather see an ad...

I suggest downloading Mozilla Firebird, aren't you just using Mozilla?
I did this first, downloaded Mozilla alone and almost turned it off instantly because the interface was so ugly... ...then I found out Mozilla Firebird and it is my primary browser now... all plugins work on it too

You can change the themes in Mozilla, and even download new themes. I prefer modern, which ships with the browser it self.... Do you guys even look through the menus, or give up right away? ;-)

Well, Netscape and Mozilla are nearly identical; after all, Netscape 6 and 7 are based on Mozilla 0.9/1.0.

I agree with website about trying Mozilla Firebird instead: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/phoenix/why/
