Thumbs up Member of the Month: May

May has passed and we have a new member of the month!

r937 (Rudy Limeback) is the member of the month for May 2003. Quite deserving, he is an army of helpfulness in the Database and ColdFusion forums.

We caught up with him to ask a few questions of the May Member of the Month.

What does the username r937 mean?

937 has been my favourite number since high school, when 9:37 marked the end of first period. (Of course, back in those days, we had only analog clocks, so it's the positions of the hands as much as the numerals that turns me on.) There's a movie with Whoopi Goldberg, can't recall the name, where she's on the phone with someone who asks her what time it is, and a little digital clock pops up on the screen, and she says "9:37" -- I just about fell off my chair. Drive any highway and you'll see license plates with 937 in them more than any other combination. Or maybe it's just me.

Anyhow, when the time came to choose my first internet account back in 1996, it had to be at least 4 characters and "rudy" was already taken at that particular ISP, so "r937" was a natural next choice. That led to r937.com, and when rudy.ca became available after Canada relaxed its ridiculous TLD rules a few years ago, that became my personal site, and r937.com my business site.

I've been looking at your web site and there seems to be recurring appearances of a '69 green VW beetle. Are you a VW Bug head (is that the correct terminology for someone who drives and/or fixes up old bugs)?

All my cars have been Beetles; this is my third. I went many years between my last one and this one, which I bought only a few years ago. I don't do any work on it myself, but have had extensive restoration done. They're a hoot to drive, and trust me, they get a lot more looks than any run-of-the-mill sedan, cruiser, or even the newer Beetles. Even so, I prefer my bicycle.

Do you have any hobbies outside of the computer world that you wouldn't mind telling us about?

My kids. Touch football. Frisbee golf. In that order.

Cultural roll call! What's your favorite book, movie, album, and breakfast cereal?

No single favourite book, although if pressed I would have to settle on A Dictionary of Modern English Usage by H.W.Fowler (fabulous dialogue, but light on character development). I like almost everything by Larry Niven, Spider Robinson, William Gibson, and Linda Nagata. Movie? I don't watch movies, except on TV, and only if there's nothing else on (or if the movie contains a 937 reference). That said, I really liked Maximum Overdrive. Album? Electric Ladyland by Jimi Hendrix. Cereal? Harvest Crunch, original formula. The kids don't like it much, so I get to eat it all myself.

This next question is an emerging Member of the Month tradition: Are you a Star Wars person or a Lord of the Rings person?

The former. I saw Star Wars when it first came out. Fantastic special effects, but that was a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. You'd have to pay me to see that other one.

When did you begin to specialize in SQL? What drew you towards this area?

In 1987, I worked for a company that installed DB2 as a mainframe "data warehouse" along with a product called QMF (Query Management Facility) based on SQL. You think SQL is difficult? So did the accountants, marketers, and managers I had to teach it to. I loved it, because it was non-procedural.

What do you think the future holds for SQL? Predictions? What advancements excite you the most?

I'm not nuts about the latest SQL standard -- structures, references, arrays, oh my... Who's going to use these, when most people have trouble with outer joins? Advancements that really excite me, but not in a positive way, are proprietary extensions; however, truth be told, I do very much like Microsoft's TOP and Oracle's CONNECT BY.

How did you get involved co-writing the book Practical Web Database Design?

Must have been word of mouth. I'm one of the founders and an active member of the evolt.org web developer community. Several people from glasshaus (the publisher) were on thelist, our discussion list. Other evolt members have written web development books for glasshaus too. It's really a shame that glasshaus -- and Wrox, and Friends of Ed -- went under. They had some excellent books in their catalogue.

I understand that you offer freelance services. What is your freelance specialty? What is your favorite type of work? (dream project?)

Data modelling, database design, and of course SQL -- writing queries, any database. I also do web development, using xhtml strict, CSS, and ColdFusion. My dream project would involve all of those skills, and allow me to do the work from home.

You have an impressive level of participation here and also at many other forums (including dbforums.com, where you're a moderator). What draws you to forums and keeps you interested?
I love SQL, and seek out SQL problems to solve. You'd be surprised how many new ones, even after so many years, I still manage to encounter. I enjoy solving SQL problems because it keeps me sharp.

If someone were to ask you what single thing they should do to become a better web designer, what would you recommend?
Learn Liquid Design using CSS without HTML tables.
    Oh wait, that's three.

That's all the questions we have! Thank you very much, and congratulations!
