Need help finding discussion forum software

    Hello all,

I will be having my site hosted on a shared Win2000 plan...

    http://www.dellhost.com/dhproduct/s1100.aspx

    My question is...

is there a message board or forum software package that will "bolt on" to my site? It does not have to be free.

I have seen numerous scripts here at SitePoint but, I would need to install them on my own server. Since I will be using a shared hosting plan this will not be possible. Plus, I'm not sure if they support PHP/MySQL or whatever.

    Hope I've explained myself clearly.

    Cheers,

    Mike

well, looks like they'll be supporting ASP, not PHP. the question now is: will they give you access to a database ? if you can get in touch with them and ask, that would be helpful. i'm not an ASP person, but if i remember correctly Snitz http://forum.snitz.com/ is quite a popular choice (provided you do have access to a database).

If you don't have access to a database then I would use YaBB http://www.yabbforum.com/ .

The basic version is flatfile which makes it reasonably slow, but I have never had any problems with it.

I used snitz for a while and it worked fine and has a pretty good following.

Personally I think the Web Wiz Forums are much better in the way they look and function. I use them at YourWebBuddy.com, you can see them here

Since they're both free, you can download them both and try them out. I don't have a problem if you want to register on my forum and try them out a bit. I have a test forum on the message boards. It's somewhere in the middle on the page I linked you to.

    Good luck,
    Palmer

If I'm not mistaken, doesn't webwiz allow you to view someone's profile (via admin cp) and you can see their password in plain text?

No, in fact, the passwords are 160-bit encrypted, one of the only few forums that do that. I recomend Web Wiz Forums over any other forum software. It has the best images, skins, mods, language files, and forum community that I've ever seen. Many other software is totally run by the programmer of the script, but WWF is run by a whole community.

Sorry for that, at the time I made that post Web Wiz did allow the viewing of passwords (I saw myself), but I'm sure since then they've fixed that.
