Video Editing Software

I am doing a web site for a friend whose daughter is trying to break into the music business. She gave me a large mpg file with three videos on it. I need to split the file into the three videos and get a still image from two of videos.

I don't have any video editing software and I am doing this site for free. Are there any decent video editing software that is cheap and free?

My windows XP came with Microsoft Movie Maker but it sucks. It keeps crashing when I am trying to export the movie.

TIA
Mary

Those are all good, but seriously, for this I think VirtualDub is probably all that's needed There's no NLE - it's just cutting and frame grabbing, yes?

If it wasn't open source I might have thought that you have shares in VirtualDub!

But seriously, I have not heard of it and just had a quick look at a review. It does seem pretty good. Do you know if you can prepare files for http streaming with it?

Hehe

No it's pretty much an AVI-only tool. So you can't encode Windows Media or Real Video directly with it if that's what you mean. Though I think the newer Indeo AVI codecs also support streaming - haven't tried this myself.

I normally use VirtualDub to do postproduction - filtering, cropping etc then encode the finished AVI with either TMPGEnc (for MPEG) or Windows Media Encoder (for streaming). You can frameserve straight from VirtualDub to TMPGEnc so you don't even need to encode the AVI first.

Pinnacle or Premiere it ain't. But you can't argue with the price and what it does, it does well.

VirtualDub worked great. I was able to split my video apart and it was easy. One other question though, how do I make still pictures from a frame in the video? I couldn't find out how to do that.

TIA

VirtualDub if you want a free alternative. QuickTime Pro is the swiss army knife in video editing as it has been said. Seen and used both.
