Just wondering, since i see most of you talking only about Windows programs, are there many Linux users around here ?

I just installed Mandrake 7.1 less than 48 hours ago and i still have problems configuring it to handle my USB devices, but wow, it's much more stable, its look (on Gnome a least) is smoother, and the amount of free softwares that come with standard distributions is really impressive ! To have an equivalent on Windows, i'd have paid lots of bucks...

    So, got 'nux ?

I started to use linux (RedHat 7.0) not far ago ... and I'm very pleased with it ... I use it on laptop and desktop , and both work fine ... but I still have to use windows for windows programming, games ; ) , and just little other stuff.

I think most of the people in these forums use both actually. I have dual boot with Windows 95 and Red Hat 6.1. Once I get a new computer I'm going to make one a dedicated Windows box and my current one a dedicated Linux box...

    Hi,

I used to Dual boot between widnows and Red Hat Linux (I can't remember the version, I think it was about 5 back then) but I removed it due to lack of hard drive space. I am buying a new hard drive soon and I plan to tripple boot between Windows 98, Windows 2k and Mandrake Linue 7.1. I'll have to keep saving though

    Hi,

I tried BEOS a while back when the newest version first came out and I can't say I was very impressed.

Two CDs is nothing my friend. SuSe 6.4 comes on SIX cds and SuSe 7.0 comes on a 6 cds AND a DVD. It comes with 1,900 programs so hopefully you'll never have to get anything else -- see: finally a use for a 75 gig hard drive. (And no - not everything is installed by default - only about 600 megs)

A DVD ? Linux supports DVD now ? They'd better have coded better USB support first... DVD is just a toy.

I looked into installing Red Hat a year ago with the help of an on-line class. I checked the message board at the end of the first week and 6 to 8 people had responded; all them talked about they had to reformat their hard drives, crashes, and the hours upon hours of time and trouble they had. I dropped the class and put my Red Hat discs in the closet.

I guess I really haven't thought of a need that makes it worth all the effort. Not to mention, I'm taking an introductary Unix class at college this quarter and I really dislike it. We've only worked at the command line prompt thus far and feels like I'm working on technology from the 1960's.

Not really...DVD is not all for entertainment purposes. Entire encyclopedias are coming on a DVD rather than a huge set of normal CDs. From the way things look, DVD's will eventually replace normal CDs as they have a much larger capacity. Not just toys

Well about $40-$50, but as usual you can download it over the Internet for free.
