Mail: cannot route to sender error

I hope someone can help me as in weeks the provider has not found a solution. Also I am not sure if that has anything to with PHP or with server settings rather.

The problem is that automated mails sent via a script with mail() are not received. Tests with a mail address of the domain brought mailer daemon messages with the following error message:

----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----
    xxxx@xxxx.xxx
(reason: 550 cannot route to sender address <apache@xxxxxxx>)
    (expanded from: <x.xxxxx@xxxx.xxx>)

The expanded mail server address (apache) is actually the placeholder address, the correct mailer mailer would be mail@domain.com.

I thank all in advance who can give advice here.

    Cheers,
    Christoph

is this happening for all address/domains you send to or just some (perhaps only domains hosted on the same box ?)

if not (i.e. if this happens to all domains) then its a qmail error and is down to your hosting provider to sort out.
