    Digital Image Browsing Software

    Hi,
I am looking for a good program to view my downloaded digital camera photos. Specifically, one that will sort them by the created or captured date (date taken), not the modified date. I edit all my photos so I don't want their viewing order based on when I saved them. So far the only one I've found is Photo Mechanic 4 for Windows which is great, but a little too pricey for me. Does anyone know of any others that have this feature. Thanks!!

I tried the trial of that and didn't see any way to sort by the capture date. I'm looking into Ulead PhotoImpact right now. Thanks.

Well, it looks like PhotoImpact doesn't do it either.

    Just a small point….

Remember that the “Capture” date is stored in the Exif information, an extension to the standard JPEG file format. If you edit your images in an application that does not retain the Exif information, then you will not be able to sort according to the date you took the picture.

I use photoshop to edit the images. Does that retain the necessary info? How can I make sure the info is preserved. I noticed that in the properties of the picture file, the date is listed as well as the new modified date. Does that mean it was saved? Also, what is Exif? Thanks.

EXIF is metadata that is saved on each digital photo you take. It includes info such as Date pic was taken, Aperture Info, Type of camera used, Flash, etc.

EXIF is retained in Photoshop with each image and will maintain the date info as well.

Here is a neat little program that may help

    Try Picasa:

It's beautiful, functional, and inexpensive. I use it everyday.
