Little project...
I thought that it would be intresting to try and change a picture of one of my close friends to look like someone from Jet Set Radio.
Is there an easy way to simpley "cell shade" a picture?
Here is the image if any of you want to have a go..

This might get you part of what you want:

Here's my little try. I simply played around with the Poster Edges filter in Photoshop.

I would say that last pic from dynagirl is fantastic. Worthy of its own tutorial thread in the Multimedia and Graphics forum.
Wow!

Thanks for the compliments!
The process was very time consuming, but not complicated. It was basically lots and lots of hand coloring (in PhotoShop). What I did was use the poster edges filter on the photo (Edge Thickness 2, Edge Intensity 1, Posterization 2) to simplify the colors. From there, I blacked out the background--using the paintbrush to get a good isolation of the image. Next, I picked 3 colors for the flesh tone, 4 colors (including white) for the shirt, 3 colors for the hair, and I started hand coloring with the paint brush. Oh, I had to deviate a bit from my simple color pallet for the mouth, eyes and nostril.
Of course, I worked in layers, so that the photo was one layer, the posterized version was another layer and my painting was done on a third layer. I frequently turned the poster layer off and on so I could jump back and forth between painting over the poster layer and over the photo layer when I needed a different perspective to decide how to paint it. When I was satisfied, I flattened the whole thing so that any gaps in the hand-painting were taken up by the poster layer below it. I'd say the final product is about 99% hand-painted.
To finish it off, I selected the black background, inverted the selection to grab the image, fiddled a bit with the selection size to allow for a black edge around the image, then pasted it in to a new transparent document. The final step was a black paintbrush (3 px) touch-up--I went through and made some lines on the shirt and smoothed some of the border edges. After that, I saved it as a gif image with gray-blend matte.
I have to say, I was very pleased with the end result. Glad everyone else likes it too.
