    Question about flash accessiblity.

    I want to replace flash by picture or text when browser doesn't have flash pluggin. I read some tutorial about this and here is the code in replacement of the normal flash embedding:
    Code:
    <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="flashmovie.swf"
        width="170" height="30">
        <param name="movie" value="flashmovie.swf" />
        <span>You don't have flash pluggin</span>
    </object>
    This works fine on IE6 and Mozzila. But on IE5.0, a strange looking textarea was showed instead of the flashmovie, though pluggin was installed. Can anyone help me?

    This is by far the best resource on making sure your pages degrade gracefully if a user doesn't have Flash.

    In brief, what it does is this:

    Does the browser have javascript? If no, display text (or graphic) alternative (in a <noscript> tag). If yes, does the browser have required version of flash? If no, display text alt. If yes, display flash.

    The advantage of this over other methods is that you can use it and still have your pages validate as XHTML.

    Hope this helps

    the textarea thing is, as far as i know, a known IE5 issue/bug. have a look at http://www.alistapart.com/stories/flashsatay/index.html for some interesting reading on the subject...

    I think I remember that the text area bug was caused by the flash plug-in being out of date, try downloading the latest version, although this doesnt help the average user.
