I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question but how easy is the flat-file version of BoardPower to install? I'm not too experienced with this stuff, I managed to install a UBB with a lot of cursing though.

If you have MySQL get the mySQL version of it. You dont have to code any mySQL, its done automatically. You just give it your username and password and its ready to go. However there is 30 cgi files you have to customize.
I found htat installing vb was extremely easy, despite knowing php, i found it absolutely unneccessary.

The MySQL version of BP is still under testing, I wouldn't go with it for now!
For the version in Perl, it's not that hard though! If you encounter problem, post here, we'll try to help.

I think the point is that you get what you pay for. $160 is not really that much for a quality product like vBulletin. You probably spend more than that eating out each month.

I agree with you on that one! TWF (The Webmaster Forums) has a hard time with Joseph Bannon, the person behind Boardpower. From what I remember, he was a moderator and an active member of TWF, and even got TWF to use his bulletin board software. I found boardpower very easy to install. Like 123finder.com said, DONT USE THE MySQL version! It's a nightmare, all you ever get are white screens and server error messages. I've set up the flat file version of B.P. about 20 times so I'f you have any problems just ask

Is it scalable, because i know most flat file stuff are really slow, and a pain to customize, and upgrade. also errors are extremely hard to fix.

I am using it! It's good, open source, but it has thread-style (not vB/UBB style)
Security of Phorum is properly taken care of! (you could read the documentation/readme to see how they recommend!)

Which would you recomend using, Phorum or BoardPower (non sql version)?
I think the answer is pretty clear, but it's up to you!
The design of BP is like vB/UBB while Phorum you'll get thread-style. (to me, I get used to both of them!)
About installing, Phorum might be more challenging (when I first read their instruction, I almost deleted it! but then I wanted to learn, accepted the challenge)
Anyway, it's not that terrible!!! Give it a shot if you like Phorum! We could back you up!

I think if I was going to pay for forum software, I'd get UBB again. I love Sitepoint, but I really do prefer it as a user to vBulletin. Mind you, it ain't about what I like...

I have the flat-file version of BP installed. Didn't find it too hard. Had to customize some files but overall it wasn't that hard.
