I don't think my server (on my computer) has the php mail() function. I also don't have an smtp server.
I'm trying to install the Invision Power Board php forum. It is working fine, but it cannot send emails. How would I get it to work? Which way should I go? Can anyone please help?

You will absolutely need to either have a SMTP server installed, or at least access to one (your ISP?). Set this up either in your php.ini file (search for SMTP =) or you can specify it within your application like:PHP Code:<?php
define('MAILHOST', 'smtp.example.com');
ini_set('SMTP', MAILHOST);
?>
or justbut that will only work on Windows anyways (which is why I asked.)PHP Code:ini_set('SMTP', 'smtp.example.com');

No, I don't have a mail server setup, and I need help with that. Or, does anyone know of any place that would offer a free email server on their server? Whats an ISP?

your windows directory.
an ISP is your Internet Service Provider, you can use the SMTP server they provide you with (the one you use to access your email from your ISP)

Well, for email I use hotmail...So, my internet service providers can provide me with a free smtp server, through which i can send emails from forms and forums?
Also, which folder is the windows folder. I'm not sure about which one to look for. Kinda lame at Operating Systems and all... just good at servers :P

Most Linux distributions come with mail servers, along with almost all kinds of common servers. (As Linux is mainly used by people for servers/work)
In erlier versions of win, the win folder would be C:\windows, not sure about xp...
and if your ISP offers e-mail using SMTP, yes, you could set php.ini to use it.
But I don't think they do...
Any programs that I could use? And what about the windows IIS SMTP server?

Windows 3.0/95/98/Me/XP/2003: C:\Windows\ (Default)
Windows NT 3.0/4.0, Windows 2000: C:\WinNT\ (Default)
(Windows 2000 might be C:\Windows, I can't remember now, lol, I don't usually use the defaults.)
And yes IIS SMTP Server would work.

Ahh. Ok. Would I place the my.ini and the php.ini files into C:\Windows as well?

When you run the MySQL install, it will place the my.ini file into C:\Windows, and PHP looks in there first, then if it doesn't find it, it will look in the directory where PHP is stored.
But yeah, they both go into C:\Windows\

There are freely available mail servers going about.... I used one on my own local dev box for a while until Windows died and I had to do a clean install... lost the mail server of course
Try www.mailenabled.com I think the address was ?
Failing that, go to google.com and search for 'email servers AND Windows' and see what that chucks up.
Word of warning though - if you are not familiar with how an email server works from the point of view of configuring your own, you may well have trouble understanding the terminology....
I made mistakes setting up mailenabled. Got it working but after some great difficulty as I didn't understand what a 'PostOffice' was for example, in relation to a 'PoP address', etc etc

Once you have a Post Office setup, you can setup domains within that Post Office, for which you can have accounts set up for. An account can recieve mail from however many domains you want within one Post Office. (Also as many addresses for each domain)

Ok, all I need it to do, is work as an outgoing SMTP mail server, nothing more. How do I get that to work, because I still can't figure it out...
