    Question SMS with PHP

    Hi all,
Does anyone know if it is possible to send SMS messges with PHP. Do I need to subscribe to a particular provider?
    Thanks for your time.

    Hanabi.

It is possible to send SMS from any server via a third party provider. When I was enquiring about good ones, someone suggested www.redcoal.com -- I never got round to using them, but they look pretty good. You buy credits for your website like you might by credits for a pay-as-you-go mobile.

Depeding on how it works (I am too young to have a cell phone, so I've never used SMS, and my dad does not buy any advanced features)... you could probably, if it had a unique IP address (internet phone?), connect to a certain port and find a command to send it one, but that would be hard to figure out that info...

Nope, no joke. It's just something I have not encountered before. For all I know it could have meant, "Simultanious Multi-Signals"

And cell phones are quite prolific in Arizona.

Hey guys. Calm your jets. Americans only use a different frequency. The technology's identical. It just so happens that their "band" is unique to the US, whereas the "band" used in the UK and Europe is different to the "band" used in Asia, hence why Europeans buy "dual band" or "tri band" phones. So they work elsewhere. I'm assuming you can get dual/tri phones in the US too, though the US market is notorious for ignoring the rest of the world (and that's not supposed to be inflamatory by the way, so don't start arguing! )

I think it was you that recommend Redcoal to me Mattias. I thought they looked very good, but I haven't had cause to sell SMS to a client.... yet!

As for free services, I don't think there are any that would allow you to relay SMS through them. It'd cost them a fortune. In fact, free SMS is becoming rare as it is now that the companies that were offering it are starting to notice that they can charge you to use their product as long as they're significantly cheaper than the mobile operators, which they can easily achieve.

Well, here in Iceland you can send SMS free from the phone companies websites, there does come a little adertisement with it though...

Yes. You can here too if you're a registered user on their network. I have an O2 phone and I can send free SMS from the O2 website because I'm a customer. I can't relay SMS messages from my own site through their server though!

well, I havn't sent sms on the vodafone site since 'Og vodafone' is a brand new company here in iceland, before it changed to vodafone you could send SMS without registering though...
but on the site of the biggest telephone company you don't need to register, you can just send SMS if you like, as many as you like ...

That is probably 10 times what it costs the cell phone companies to send my SMS, which they me charge 20 cents to send. Sneaky *******s!

The problem with writing scripts that uses these kinds of forms is that your application will break down if the form stops working, is changed, or if the company catches you and blocks you (or sues you, if things turns really nasty).

I know! It's really, really common for kids around here to have cell phones. It's a great way for parents to check up on their kids.

I also found it Cletes2's comment calling SMS an "advanced feature" funny - that's actually something I only would picture my grandmother say!
