    does anyone know what this ns4.7 gremlin is?

    Hi,

    I have a table which is rendering perfect in just about every browser except ns 4.7 and it's driving me mad - it's probably VERY basic but it needs another set of eyes - min are about to fall out of my head

    heres the URL

    http://labs.themesforge.com/ns47problem.htm

    and the code:

    Code:
     <table width="133" border="0" align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
      <tr>
    	<td colspan="3"><img src="images/right2_top.gif" width="133" height="9" /></td>
      </tr>
      <tr>
    	<td width="5" height="17"><img src="images/right_tp_lft.gif" width="5" height="17" /></td>
    	<td width="123" height="17" background="images/right2_bg.gif"><strong>TITLE
    	  GOES HERE</strong></td>
    	<td width="5" height="17"><img src="images/right_tp_rt.gif" width="5" height="17" /></td>
      </tr>
      <tr>
    	<td width="5" background="images/right_lft_bg.gif"><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="5" height="1" /></td>
    	<td width="123" bgcolor="#304559"><p>
    		content goes here</p></td>
    	<td width="5" background="images/right_rt_bg.gif"><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="5" height="1" /></td>
      </tr>
      <tr>
    	<td colspan="3"><img src="images/right2_bt.gif" width="133" height="8" /></td>
      </tr>
    </table>
    any help is much appreciated!

    You can't have no content between <td> and </td> for NN4.7 or it won't even render the cell.

    try <td> &nbsp;</td> (note the space before &nbsp in cells that you don't have any content

    thank aaron - but as you can see there is content between all my td tags (i.e. images work just as good as &nbsp - it must be something else

    I don't have NN4.7 installed because I just don't code for it anymore.

    However when I made tables like that in the past sometimes I would have to put a clear pixel spacer in the content area from having it shift.

    Something like <img src="clearpx.gif" width="123" height="1"> either above or below your "content goes here" cell.

    can nn4.7 handle xhtml?
    maybe it is all confused?
    Dredging back the memories from when I still coded for NN4.7...
    try putting a 123px wide spacer gif in the center content div... probably before your paragraph tags

    Looks bad in Mozilla too. I'm not quite sure whats going on but I can't get into the URL you posted (times out). If you could post again with a corrected URL, I'll take another look.

    hey ct_roy - dunno anything about XHTML, but when I ran your page through a validator, it seems to be questioning your doctype:

    http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=ht...s47problem.htm
    can't see why it says background isn't a valid attribute of TD [img]images/smilies/confused.gif[/img]

    maybe it's lookin' for one 'a them forward slashes before you close the tag

    Netscape 4.7x basically has no more issues with XHTML Transitional, than are likely to occur if you chose to use HTML 4.01.

    The reason you get the W3C Validator saying; there is no attribute "background" is because you need to set the backgound for a table cell via CSS and not (x)html.

    I did a real quick clean up for you - by all means it is not completely optimized (why use a single image for the top and bottom of the table - it would be much more robust to use two corner images. It would allow you to change the width of the table at whim)

    First of all - netscape 4.x needs to be told via image spacers how wide EVERY column is. It messes up on cell width definitions. So all I did was through a dummy row in their defining each column width with spacer images.

    And btw - when using cascading stylesheets - use cascading! It will save you a ton of size and coding. Their is no reason to redefine fonts for every class when you just need to define them once for each selector.

    Anyways - good luck. This should work.
    Code:
    <table width="133" border="0" align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
    <tr>
    <td colspan="3"><img src="images/right2_top.gif" width="133" height="9" /></td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td><img src="images/right_tp_lft.gif" width="5" height="17" /></td>
    <td background="images/right2_bg.gif"><strong>TITLE GOES HERE</strong></td>
    <td><img src="images/right_tp_rt.gif" width="5" height="17" /></td>
    </tr>
    <tr bgcolor="#304559">
    <td><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="5" height="1" /></td>
    <td><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="123" height="1" /></td>
    <td><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="5" height="1" /></td>
    </tr>
    <tr bgcolor="#304559">
    <td><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="5" height="1" /></td>
    <td height="100"><p> content goes here</p>
    </td>
    <td><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="5" height="1" /></td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td colspan="3"><img src="images/right2_bt.gif" width="133" height="8" /></td>
    </tr>
    </table>
