MySQL Installation Trouble

Hi!

I am trying to install MySQL on an Apache server running off Windows XP Home. I have installed MySQL as a service and the command prompt states this was done successfully.

However, when I try to start the service, I get the following error:

The MySQL service is starting.
The MySQL service could not be started.
A system error has occurred.
System error 1067 has occurred.
The process terminated unexpectedly.

Can anybody tell me why this happening and how to correct it?

I have setup the my.cnf file as it tells me to, and have followed the book to the letter, I don't see why it doesn't work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

All fixed...it turned out even though I had told XP not to hide known file extensions, it had hidden the .cnf, so the file was called my.cnf.cnf.

what was the problem exactly, because my friend is having this same problem on his xp home machine?

The problem was it had no config file. MySQL needs my.cnf to run. There was no my.cnf, but there was a my.cnf.cnf. By default, Windows hides the .cnf extension so when she renamed her sample file my.cnf, it was actually renaming it my.cnf.cnf thus taking the config file away from MySQL preventing it from starting.
