I am trying to do some testing of my site's css in ie5.0, since it is such a commonly used brower. I don't actually have that browser but I found it and many others at http://browsers.evolt.org.
Do you guys have some suggestions as to the most practical version of ie5.0 to use and any others, for that matter? I already have Netscape 4.8 and Opera 6.3.

i usually test in 5.5 (Service Pack 2). i may be wrong, but i think with windows' update (in the case of 2000SP3 and XP even automated), it's a safe guess that most users will have at least this installed...but i'm open to differing views...

I wanted to install ie5 on one one of my PCs running XP but they told me that such thing is impossible
I have IE5.5 on a laptop running win 2000, but i was thinking if i should install ei5 somewhere also to be more covered.
What are the differences in the way ie5 and ie5.5 render pages? I believe that ie5 doesn't support filters, but probably thats not the only difference.
i think IE5.5 is capable of a little bit more CSS1, but yes, it seems that most new developments where proprietary bells&whistles...

I have 5 running @ home, and won't upgrade as I only ever use IE for testing and can test 6 at work - if ya need a screenie, gis a shout.

H...hehe, similar to me. i've got 5.5 on my main machine, and am running my old machine headless (connect via VNC) to test IE6.0 ... i just somehow prefer 5.5 (well, actually, i prefer phoenix, but have 5.5 for testing)

Phoenix shares the Gecko rendering engine (the basis for browsers like Mozilla and Netscape), with all of the features of a browser, and minimal bloat. With Mozilla or Netscape, if you download the complete package you not only get a browser, but also a mail/newsgroup reader, chat clients, media players, Java, etc. you name it. Phoenix is the browser component only, and is extensible through skins/themes and plug-ins. I also enjoy Phoenix because it doesn't install any information into the Windows registry, which makes installing/uninstalling it a lot easier (to uninstall just send the "Phoenix" folder to the recycle bin).
Also, you will not hear much about Phoenix anymore. The browser has changed its name to Firebird because of trademark/legal issues. You can download Firebird at http://www.mozilla.org/projects/phoenix/.
it has the advantages of mozilla, without the heavy footprint. it's a pure web-browser (where mozilla has newsreader, email client, etc built into it, making it quite bloated). it's very standards compliant (can do most a good chunk of CSS2), can be easily customised (with lots of extensions to suit everybody's needs...particularly the developers'), and it has tabbed browsing. gotta love it. oh, and it's recently been re-dubbed "firebird"

It's also worth noting that Mozilla will be switching to the Phoenix model as of Mozilla 1.5 (which should be happening in a few months), since the Phoenix developers have done such a good job at speeding up the browser.
So whatever works in Mozilla it will work in Phoenix in the exact same way?
No, there are differences in the way the browser works/behaves. However, as far as rendering HTML, you'll see the same thing in Phoenix that you do in Mozilla.

Actually, unless you use the nightly of Firebird, it will not work like the latest Mozilla browser.
Thats bad then. Because no matter how good a browser is, for me it means just another browser to test my sites on!!! (of course the browser should have a certain % for me to bother with it)
There are really six codebases you need to worry about:
- IE/Windows
- IE/Mac
- Gecko (Mozilla, NS6+, Phoenix, Camino, etc.)
- KHTML (Konqueror and Safari)
- Opera, and
- Netscape 4.x
If you can cover these six then you're good to go, at least as far as screen media (computers, as opposed to print, cellphones, etc.)

I should have specified "Visual Computer Browsers", not just "PC Browsers". There are many text-only and aural browsers available for computers, depending on platformdon't forget text browsers (lynx and more exotic ones like braillesurf), and - for the masochists in all of us - MSN Tv Viewer
Actually, the nightly would be your best bet. It has all the newest stuff and has absolutely no problems that I can find on Windows. http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/phoenix/n.../latest-trunk/
you run nightlies at your own risk. it may work without problems on your specific machine, but you never know what it may or may not do on someone else's setup...
but yes, if you like to live on the bleeding edge, nightlies are the way to go...
