    Gradient Options in Photoshop 6

I am looking to create a gradient which has a picture fade from being non-transparent, to transparent in Photoshop 6. I can make it so there is a single colour fading from non-transparent to transparent, however i cant find how to make a picture do this. Basically, if i could simply make graduates between layers, it would serve my purpose.

Could someone please tell me how to do this?

    1. Open up a new document with a transparent background
    2. Paste the image into a new layer
With the new layer selected, go to Layer > Add Layer Mask > Reveal All
    3. Select Gradient Tool and draw your gradient how you want it (Make sure black and white are the background and foreground colors).
    4. The transparent layer below should show through.
