This thread might be of some use: http://www.sitepointforums.com/showt...?threadid=9615

Nicky suggested Java in a Nutshell by O'Reilly to me, i'm in a similar position having some programming experience, had a look at this book and think it's really good.

I am just learning Java myself and would reccomend "Sam's Teachyourself Java 2 Platform". It helps to have some programming experiance, but isn't neccasary.

There is a proffessional reference edition of the book out. It has an additional week of lessons, plus another 300 pages of appendix material. It's hardcover and worth paying a few extra bucks for.

Well i totally agree with you because recently i bought one of the "Sam's Teach yourself series" precisely on cgi and i loved its approach, especially the pain the author took to explain the fundamental, the script examples and other important additions.

I will buy this collection you just talked about because i want to grasp properly Java and it related enterprise applications. And in the end i will feedyou back.

I've got a copy of "Sams Teach Yourself Java 2 in 21 Days" right here with me. I've struggled with it, but that's because I'm still not comfortable with Object-Oriented Programming...anyone who has that down should have no problem with this book.
