    General web-site accessbility

I am undertaking an investigation into web-site accessibility for my final year dissertation. The aim is to produce what I am calling 'Ten Tests of Accessibility', a web version of the hotel stars rating (in the UK, not sure if the US has a similar version?).

Anyway, I am posting this request to ask for as many people to fill out my questionnaire to try and get some meaningful data from people who are well versed in the use of the Internet!

The URL of the survey is: http://www.farstate.com/survey. The survey has nothing to do with Farstate the Network company, they are providing the hosting space for the survey.

The more people that can participate the better, there is only 13 questions, all multiple choice. Should only take a couple of minutes.

    Thank-you in anticipation!

Aren't your results going to be scewed by the fact that we are very proficient at surfing the web being web developers?

took the survey. I'd like to see the results posted here as well, although they will be skewed by our votes, since we're professional web surfers.

Thanks for all taking the survey! I have finished the dissertation now, just forgot to post in this forum. I will re-do the result summary to take into account all the new replies and publish it in the next couple of days. . The more results the better really, it gives a wider view of the preferences of users.

With regards to skewed votes, accessibility in my view should apply to all users. The term tends to just be applied to persons viewing under conditions other than what is normal to the majority.

Your questions do not fall exclusively under the domain of accessibility. Many of them were also usability-related (yes I know they go hand-in-hand), and some just came down to a matter of practicality or preferences. There is also no validation on this survey (I sent the link to a friend of mine and he submitted the form accidentally before completing it; not very helpful). Maybe some of your questions could use modification; you will get more accurate results that way. Otherwise, great survey and I look forward to hearing your conclusions!

The survey was only originally created to get results for use in my dissertation and was built in a few minutes. It was never the intention to leave it live for so long else I would've put better validation on it.

Blank replies are automatically filtered out during the processing, but this is not passed back to the user.

Conclusions will come in the next few days.

    Arrow :: Results ::

Ok, I have uploaded the graphs generated from the results collected. For comparison, the following applies - approximately 80 replies were received, 14 incomplete replies were received which haven't been included in the results, the results are current to 22/09/03.

The survey itself can be found at: http://www.farstate.com/survey

The results can be found at: http://www.farstate.com/site/survey

(please note the differences in the URL's)

Further information will be uploaded shortly, including results tables and commentary. Additionally a feedback facilitity will be added for you to comment on the results - this will take the form of a simple forum/guestbook.

For comparison and validation, does anyone have any other such results from otehr surveys? Perhaps you could make it known via this thread and we could collaborate these results into a meaningful resource for people.

An aim would be to create a new survey that reflects peoples comments and then make it available via the Net but to a much wider audience and try and get 100's (or 1000's) of replies which would reflect a wider cross section of the net.

For your information - I graduated from the University of Lincoln successfully and acheived a 2:1 mark for my dissertation! Thanks to all those who took part in the survey. I am now interested in continuing my study into Internet accessibility & preferences...
