Save for the web in Illustrator

Last few times I've used Illustrator 10 I've gotten an error saying "this program has encountered an unknown error", when I got to Save for the web. Is this something that happens with others, or is it just a problem I'm having with my program? Thanks

Just tried it then, saving an illustrator file as a GIF. Worked fine.

Have you tried saving out to different formats or tried it with a different file? Perhaps if the problem occurs all the time you need to re-install the program,

Well it's just been with this one file I was using. Just occurred for the first time recently. I 'saved as' the file to a different name and all, but got the same thing.

Actually, after it i had tried to do it like 5 times without success, it out of nowhere it worked (on that file), and then after that it quit working again.

to get around the problem I had to save it as .psd file, open it in fireworks, and save it to a .gif from there. That's too much work....

Time is money and that takes too much time. If the problem occurs with only one specific file, try this:

    select all the objects
    copy the selected objects
    open a new document
paste the objects into the new document
then try saving as a GIF again

I have no idea if this will work, but its worth a try. It sounds like Illustrator doesn't like certain elements of the file when saving for web.

Is there an error code? Quote it at the Adobe Support site

    Failing that, try a re-install.

Failing that, I'm outta ideas sorry

might be time to re-install from scratch. not sure of the technicalities, but it sounds like illustrator's "link" to imageready (which is invoked when you choose "safe for web...") is broken...

You shouldn't have to reinstall anything if its just this one file causing the problem. I'm also not aware that AI uses ImageReady to save for web. Illustrator doesn't come with image ready so that would be very strange. As far as I know its just a plug-in.

What vargz said should work if it a damaged file, if you have some damaged art then you will have to find out what imported art is causing the problem. Delete part of the document until you can save to web, this is how you track down a bad font or image.

Well like I said I kept trying and it wouldn't work. I even closed and opened illustrator a few times and checked each time to see if it worked. One of the times it did, but after adding even more revisions to the file it went back to not working again.

The error code I get is just "this program has encountered an unknown error"

I'll mess around with it, and if I have anymore problems I post so. Thanks for all your help

Have you checked for the "Save for Web" plug-in as iwinweekly suggested? On a Mac, it's in the "Illustrator Formats - Standard" folder.
