    Just moved in and already....

My wife and I just moved in and we've already gotten a ton of telemarketers. We've gotten more than we had at our old place. And this number is unlisted!!!

This one took the cake today. How utterly annoying...

It was a recording. IT was left on my answering service at 10:30 this morning while I was at work. I guess one of the things that irritates me the most is that they try to pretend like it's not a recording. :\ Like, who are you kidding?

Your goin about this the wrong way. I believe there are phone directories (contact your provider) in which you can find if the number they want you to call will incur charges.

    Contact them and tell them

    1. You're being recorded
    2. Remove me from your listing, legally you have 2 weeks.
    3. Thank you for your time (be nice!)

They call again after 2 weeks, then record it and take it to small claims court and see what you can do about pressing harassment charges. $1500 baby! I've had friends do this! Don't bother with lawyers.

At least they sound very realistic. I always get automated messages from some guy trying to 'help' me evaluate the house I'm living in.

I normally hang up after 2 seconds.

To everyone who gets telemarketers calling. When they call and start their pitch, simply ask them "Are you a telemarketer" I'm pretty sure they are required by law to answer yes to that question since they always do. After they say yes, ask them to be removed from their list.

The calls will slowly com to a stop. Regarding the recordings, I have no idea how to get around that. Looks like they're thinking up new ways to interupt your dinner.

I get so annoyed with telemarketers, they drive me nuts. I tell them that if I want a particular service, I'm more than capapble of looking somebody up and contacting them myself!

When we bought our last house, we made sure the number was ex-directory and for a while we were safe. Then all of a sudden the calls came in droves. I found out my husband had been filling in surveys (the ones the entice you with a "free prize draw"!) and he was putting our bloody phone number on them!!!!!!!

Needless to say, now we've moved and have a new number, also ex-directory, the surveys get shredded!!!

I rarely get telemarketing calls...maybe 4 or 5 a year. Before they get there first sentence out I say "Sorry, I don't buy anything over the phone." They hang up.

I do get a few calls a year from Sears. A real person calls you and asks "Would you like to hear a pre-recorded message about Sears Carpet Cleaning".

    lol

when i'm bored i like to have fun with telemarketers.
if they're offering me say a credit card, i'll tell them: "ok, this is what i want, i want $0 fees, i want 5000 air miles per dollar purchased, and i want 90% cash back on every purchase"...they're like Uhh...well..we could accomodate your requests or some odd BS and then they try to weasel out...it's funny and not to mention fun.
I also pretended to be a crabby old man one time and kept yelling at the dude on the other end "what's your name??? i'm going to get my lawyers and sue you!!"...etc..etc.
but then you'll get the really aggresive ones that yell back, when that happens i usually just hang up the phone. *shrugs* no point in having fun there..

ooo!! plus there are scams...there was a feature in the tele the other day where apparently 100% of the 50% of telemarketting scams in the UK are from Canada.
and you thought we were nice and passive

in any case, telemarketers are just regular people who needs to pay the bills, sometimes they get so much pressure reaching quotas that you really can't blame them when they become aggresive. (note: i have friends who've worked as telemarketers)

if you're annoyed with telemarketers, do what naramation suggested, get the telezapper

We may have gotten 6 telemarketing calls the whole time at the other apartment - a year or so. We've been in a week and had 9 or 10. And we're unlisted on our new number...

That and offers for oil service for our oil-based furnace. We had to go to settlement with an oil contract, which we did. Used the same company the sellers had because of their history with our particular furnace. I've gotten about 10 different offers for oil service since we moved in just over a week ago.

Oh, and let's not forget about Home security services. I've got the do-it-yourself kit offer. I've got the $99 installlation with 3 months free monitoring offer. Sheesh. How do all these people get our number and find out we're new residents? :\

    Hi Aaron:

We were getting alot until my wife got a service from the phone company to block calls without a caller id, and we put our names on the 'Do Not Call' list for our state. I'm not sure if MD has such a list, but it is worth checking out.

    Best Regards,

I purchased a service from SBC that monitors the calls as they come in so if a number is listed as unavailable, it goes to privacy manager and I can block any calls I don't want.

I got the service after receiving annoying phone calls from a company that would call at all hours of the day and then hang up, and caller id showed the number as unavailable so I couldn't trace who the caller was. Thats when I talked to the phone company and since I've had this service, I was able to track the caller, notify them, and the their annoying calls stopped altogether.

It costs about 5 bucks a month but it's well worth it since I don't have to bother with annoying telemarketers or prank callers.

Real estate transaction listings. They're listed in the newspaper and are available to anyone who gets the paper. Not sure how they got the number other than dialing 411.

One of the most notorious groups of companies who sell lists for telemarketing purposes are mortgage companies. It is a big money business. Many rent their lists monthly for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Since it happens monthly, it seems like the minute your escrow is closed people start calling. Just wait until the mortgage companies start selling your mortgage on an almost monthly basis. Nothing like sending your house payment to different companies every month.

OK. Here's how you can stop most all telemarketing. I got on these lists over 10 years ago and I get maybe one or two telemarket calls a year (usually local) and almost no paper junk mail. Write to the:

    Telephone Preference Service
    PO Box 9014 Farmingdale
    NY 11735-9014

You can do the same for junk mail at:

    Mail Preference Service
    PO Box 9008
    Farmingdale
    NY 11735-9008

If a call does get through I ask for:

    1. The name of the company
    2. A contact phone number
    3. The name of the caller

Then I tell them that if they ever call again, I will file a suit for harassment. I never hear from them again. Of course, you have to keep a log of calls for this to work (if you want to follow though).
