    tiled background for different resolutions?

    Hi all,
I have a rectangular gif, a quarter of which is filled with some color and the remaining part is white. You know, the kind if tiled as background image, will produce a colored strip at the left of the web page...
My question is : How wide do I make the gif? I originally made it 800px wide and 25px high, but when I tiled as background image and viewed it in a 1400*1024 resolution, the page looked ugly, with the tiled graphic repeating itself(because of its smaller width)! How do I set a width which is good for all resolutions?
    thanks

The MAJORITY (not all) of web users don't view over 1600x1200 at the moment. I use that as a standard, or try to stay away from tiled BGs alltogether.
