If I remember correctly, some older browsers do not support PNG files at all, so probably will not display them.

    I may be wrong though.

IE5.5+/Win, bless its heart, will, in fact, display a PNG, but it doesn’t natively support alpha transparency. In IE5.5+/Win, the transparent area of your PNG will display at 100% opacity—that is, it won’t be transparent at all.

I'd just use whatever.. w3c recommends PNG for almost everything, but some browsers like IE do not support really really good 256 transparent PNGs... At least, I'm pretty sure.

Actually 256 color transparent PNG's (8-bit) displays fine on IE for me, however 24-bit and 32-bit transparent ones is a [word not really suitable but needs a placeholder] on IE , still the question is about 8-bit PNGs not the full PNG alpha-transparency filter (which I know IE cannot display ).

Yeah, well, those type of PNG's... Some people were complaining about GDKs and forum buttons not being IE compliant...

http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/pngsuite.html was helpful when I was checking into png support.

(oops forgot to answer your question)
Based on the icons, I chose to stay with gif for the time being.
