Looking at the site in question, eZ publish 3.0 could easily have been used to build it. More to the point, (ignoring the content itself) it would probably be not much more than a week or two of work. AUS $4 million? Someone's laughing all the way to the bank methinks...

The worse part of the entire story was that the site is for the Australian Government Department that develops and implements policy issues for the IT industry down here. Gee I wonder why we have so many IT issues not resolved at the moment llike spam and the ongoing online content debate.

my local ISP charges $150/yr + $50 setup fee for a massive 5mb of hosting space what a deal... oh and you dont get mysql, a control panel or anything else from them

something that even annoys me more is the appointment of fujitsu as a web dev/design company.

come on.

how pathetic is that.

there are some major dev and design shops down under that have created/developed/implemented some amazing projects. yet they give the contract to a multinational conglomorate with it's finger in so many pies that they would hardly know what they were doing in any one of them.

no wonder they got burned.

Well the met police in London once paid £22,000 ($34,187.03) for the repair of a kettle, so god only knows what their site cost

The problem is that even government departments responsible for stuff like IT development are committees of politicians, and not experts - any work is contracted by people with little or no-knowledge to people who know all too well that they can charge what they like and still get the deal
