    Hello!

Here's a wierd little problem I came across when I was structuring my site.

I hate a link in a page to a powerpoint file at http://www.hull.ac.uk/hubs/people/st.../BALTECON.PPT. For some reason, the browser came up that the file couldn't be found. So off I went checking the file was there and that the link was right, and it was, but the file still couldn't be found.

So I moved the file up on level into http://www.hull.ac.uk/hubs/people/st...5/BALTECON.PPT and now the link works fine! So this makes me think, is there a maximum length allowed for URLs? Does it depend on the server type? (Ours in an Apache server running on Unix).

Has anyone come across this before? Any insights?

    Thanks,

    Ady

To the best of my knowledge, I don't believe there is a length limit. You may want to triple-check for typos.

    Right, wierd then.

I doubt very much there was a typo, as I created the link using Dreamweaver and browsing to the file.

I think i'll re-create the situation and see what happens. I'm baffled!

I also do not think there is a limit. As I have used a CJ.com url that was over 200 characters in length and it worked.

The technical limit is 255 characters.

22 characters, it must have been over that then. Problem solved. Cheers Wayne!

Wayne, does that include links created dynamically? For example if someone did a search with a cgi program that used the 'get' method and created something like mysite.com/search.cgi?=searchsomething&something&something

    Yes, it does include.
Therefore, when passing a paragraph into the URL ) hope you don't!), you should use POST instead.

Mapquest.com generated this URL for me:

    http://www.mapquest.com/cgi-bin/ia_f...nd+Map=Get+Map

I'm pretty sure that is much longer than 255 characters...and you should be able to copy the whole thing and paste it into the address bar.

I think it could be something server side. I heard once that there was a maximum length for a directory path on a computer - and afterall a URL is just a directory on some server somewhere.

I too have pasted veritable essays into my URL box and had them work fine.

This is one long (and weird) URL I got from my iSyndicate headlines:

    http://log.isyndicate.com/pscripts/h...1_07%2c55.pbut

    Yikes, try remembering that!
