What's the best free ASP shopping cart ?

Ooh, as far as I know that market is scarce in the ASP world. I have evaluated Comersus Shopping Cart (demo of the shop is here) which is free and has several add-ons that you can purchase at fair prices. It is written in pure VBScript for ASP and doesn't require any COM components to be installed on your host (which is practical for small e-comm sites that run on a virtual host). You can also run it on MS Access or MySQL (though it will be tough finding a virtual host offering Windows/IIS and MySQL).

Either way, Comersus is a fine solution for a small scale site, but be careful, I find the code to be very sloppy! You might want to clean up the codebase, extend it (e.g. support for transactions) and last but not least add some stronger security schemes to the whole package.

Otherwise, you can check out dozens of tutorials that show you how to build a custom shopping cart in ASP, build from several code snippets or go for MS Commerce Server 2002... okay, just kidding on that last one

btw. http://www.adehost.com has mssql and mysql on it's shared windows environment. extremely reasonable pricing there... they also have an e-comm solution available with their packages. haven't tried it though.

Really? Well what is typically used? I thought ASP would be a good way to go.

Weird, I just tried the demo (http://www.comersus.com/storeInsith/...namicIndex.asp) and got an error that cookies are disabled. (They aren't).
I never get anything like that on other sites.

go to http://www.aspin.com. lots of links to sources you can buy, download or learn from. i've also used a Sam's book called "Teach Yourself E-Commerce Programming with ASP in 21 Days" that was very helpful. you can prolly find a very cheap used one in Amazon. but there is also free source for asp.net if your inclined to go that route.

    Lightbulb

I'm using Comersus on my site at http://shop.mahaenergy.com

I do agree that the code can sloppy and the authors had some weird ideas sometimes. I think it might of originally been written by somebody outside of the US which is why some of the default behavior seems kind of backward.

I've found it *very* easy to modify though, and I have done some fairly major enhancements to my cart.
