I'm fully aware of how great vBulletin is - it's features, it's speed, and it's ability to be customized. However, is it really worth losing my post count and registered members of my current boards, and the (hefty) $160 price tag?

    Opinions, please.

Personally speaking I don't see any difference between vBulletin, UBB or ezBoard (from the visitor's point of view).

I think that you shouldn't upgrade or change the software if you think that you can manage your forums with the current software. But if you have any doubts of that, this would perhaps be the best time to change it - as your forums still have quite low amount of registered users.

    Yay.

If you are really serious about your site, then I would go ahead and dishout the $160 for vBulletin, just because it is much faster, has a lot more features, and is easier to customize. The fact that it is written in PHP and uses Mysql makes me want to get it.

Well because most people don't know the difference between forums (or don't care) you really dont need to dish out the cash if you dont want to.

If you want a fast PHP based board, theres always phorum (which is free).

well i had the same thoughts when i was deciding to move from my ezboard to vB

my ezboard was 10 months old at the time and had

    199 members + 4,000 posts in total

then after i consulted my members and discussed it for a lengthy 1 day we decided the move would be great for us. This was at a time when my ezboard was loading slow and just not allowing me to grow.

I made the move to vB on June 24, 2000 and it was an instant success, which both memberships and posts skyrocketing to unbelievable heights.

    From June 24, 2000 - present there's been

    853 members + 54,900+ posts !!! that's in 113 days !

that's 14 times the number of posts in 1/3 of the time my ezboard was online for.

go for the move it's for the best

I think that everyone has to keep in mind that ezboard is a hosted forum. That means that they make up your mind for you, and that you depend on them for your site to be up, etc...

That is not a good way to handle a professional site in my mind. Just my opinion.

yeah ezboard has now gotten faster and bigger than ever but vB is definitely the way to go... i have referred alot of potential vB owners to vB since my vB is like a walking talking advertisement hehe

I would like to introduce to you a free alternative to Vbulletin.
It is not yet as feature full, and does not provide a admin interface but it will soon.
To the end users it is very similar, it is also super easy to customise.

    Check it out at http://www.yapbb.net

    Just my opinion...lol

Thanks everyone... I will probably purchase vBulletin (just have to wait for some "funding"... ). It's a good point that it's best to handle a professional site with a professional forum, not ezboard's one where you have to depend on their servers and server their ads.

I have a new vbulletin board, and I like it so much that I'm about to buy a second license and start another board. I chose vBulletin after visiting many other boards and reading up on them. I much prefer its SQL database over the flat files at UBB. I also can't stand UBB's search function. It takes forever to search a big board. I would pay the $160.
