    php pull in an html textarea box

    I've got a page where a user can modify some of their info. As a normal courtosey, the form displays the existing data in the form.

    this is the form:

    Code:
    <form action="<?=$PHP_SELF?>" method="post">
    		<p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Edit a Parent </font> </p>
    		<font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Name:</font>
    		<input type="text" name="name" value="<?=$name?>" size="20" maxlength="255"><br />
    		<font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Email:</font>
    		<input type="text" name="email" value="<?=$email?>" size="20" maxlength="255"><br />
    		<font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Phone Number:</font>
    		<input type="text" name="phone" value="<?=$phone?>" size="20" maxlength="255"><br /> Login ID: <input type="text" name="login" value="<?=$login?>" size="20" maxlength="255"><br />
    		<font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Password:</font>
    		<input type="text" name="pw" value="<?=$pw?>" size="20" maxlength="255"><br />
    		<font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Active Account?</font>
    		<input type="text" name="active" value="<?=$active?>" size="1" maxlength="1">
    		<em><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">-remember 1 = on, 0= off</font></em><br />
    		<font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Opt-In for email reminder?
    		<input type="text" name="remind" value="<?=$remind?>" size="1" maxlength="1">
    		<em>-remember 1 = on, 0= off</em></font><br />

    <font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">
      <br />Notes: </font><br />
    		<textarea name="notes" value="<?=$notes?>" rows="15" cols="45" wrap></textarea><br />

    <input type="hidden" name="id" value="<?=$id?>" /><br />
    <input type="submit" name="submit" value="SUBMIT UPDATED DATA" /><P>
    <INPUT TYPE="RESET" name="reset" value="Reset Page to Previously Saved Values"></p>
    </form>
    Sorry for the formatting

    all of the data is displaying correctly EXCEPT for the data that should be in the "Notes" field. I'm looking at the dbase, and there's data in the $notes field for this record. I know it's getting fetched by the preceeding SQL query because an echo("this is the notes data: $notes"); done right above this form does show the correct data in my browser (the same data I can spy directly in mysql)

    i've tried w/ long php tags, too. is the textarea field not compatible?
