Problem with base tag and css in Netscape

    My site

    http://321webliftoff.net

looks OK in IE but in Netscape the css files won't load.

I tracked the problem down to the use of

    <base href="http://321webliftoff.net/">

When removed, the site works OK in Netscape.

I need to use the base tag so that the error404 file works.

So, is there a way around this?

could you elaborate on your error404 page ? what exactly happens when you remove the base href ?

also, as a sidenote: your site is far from being accessible . for one, it completely relies on javascript to create huge parts of the page (menu, for instance)...and there's a few more. see http://www.section508.gov/index.cfm?...tent&ID=12#Web for an initial outline

    Hello redux

    i do appreciate your help.

    i use http://www.echoechoplus.com

    and they say:

Can I use custom error pages instead of the 404 File not found?

Yes. Simply upload a file named "error404.html" to the main folder of your domain and it will be used whenever a 404 occurs

Now, I thought you had to put in a <base href .... > to get the error404.html to work if the files were not in the root directory.

But I may be wrong.... will have to test it!

Also, I understand what you say about javascript....

perhaps using .php might be better?

Incidentally, http://www.section508.gov/ uses external .js files.

    Hey, redux

    I see you use:

    Mozilla 1.3; Win2000

    Do you recommend Mozilla 1.3?

actually, it's Phoenix 0.5 (who probably sends a user agent string similar to Mozilla 1.3). it's a good browser for power users, with a very capable rendering engine and lots of free add-ons and themes. see http://texturizer.net/phoenix/

as for external .js and such: javascript is not the problem. the problem arises when you completely rely on javascript, i.e. when your site is completely unusable when javascript is disabled or not available. in the case of your site, the whole navigation menu simply does not display, making it impossible to use - whereas section508's site still works perfectly (minus a few bells and whistles provided by the javascript, which are not essential to the core function of the site).
