    October 11, 2000 9:29 AM PT

Chaos Club member Andy Mueller-Maguhn is one of five regional directors elected to the worldwide Internet body.

The first open balloting of board members to the non-profit group overseeing the Internet's name and address system led on Tuesday to the election of five regional directors, including a German hacker.

People get "hacker" and "cracker" confused.

A hacker is generally a GOOD person who doesn't do all the bad stuff to sites.

A cracker is the type of person who tries to ruin web sites and does bad things.

Doesn't "hacker" usually refer to those who break in solely to steal information? It's still illegal but it doesn't necessarily include DAMAGE to the system hacked.

Well, not really. The classic definition of "Hacker" is someone who finds out how computers work just for the sake of doing it, and is very, very good at it.

The word hacker is so amazingly mis-used by the general public...it annoys me to no end.

For example, involving CBS' official "Survivor" site, someone took a look at the image paths for some of the images of castaways with an "X" over their face - signifying that they had been voted off. He went to a directory based on this and found one picture for each castaway - but one of them had no "X".

What do the news reports say? A "hacker" discovered the picture on the CBS website. Some even said that a "hacker broke into the CBS website." This is insane! It's a simple observation of image paths! Under that faulty logic, my 9 year old sister is nearly a hacker capable of "breaking into" websites.

Most hackers shouldn't call themselves that anymore, since the word has mutated to mean someone who performs malicious and/or evil actions on computers, even though that is not the definition.

This thread's being moved to the General Chat forums. Although it's related to WH/DM, more conducive discussions on general terms and ICANN's decision would be better served in the other forums.

Hello everybody! Welcome to the General Forum. I think you are all a bunch of cracker-eating hackers. Go Packers! I'll agree with you, though. He's a criminal.

A hacker is someone who knows a lot about computers. A phreak is someone who knows alot about phones.

Hackers usually report about security holes and bugs, unless there a lame script kiddy.
