Regarding word of mouth promotion, that is definitely the BEST way to get people to your site. Unfortunatly for me, it's harder to remember sports-central.org than sportscentral.com. But I have no choice...

The easier to remember and shorter the domain, the more word of mouth promotion you're going to get.

I actually am done with my advertisment article for next year's ad. I am going to write an article for a national sports magazine and basically plug my site. I have to pay the full priced page cost, but it will be worth it. This is a great article for all you out there!

Writing articles is definitely one of the more successful website promotion tactics you can use. There are some websites where I see 30-50 visits immediately (within a week) when one of my articles is posted. The long-term payoff is even better.

I'm still getting occasional referrals to my old site from an email newsletter article that went out more than a year ago. If you get real aggressive about it, just publishing enough articles in enough places is probably enough to make your traffic counter spin.
