    Hi, there! See the link in my signature for a complete list of pre-packaged free and commercial forum software. I'm sure you'll find something to suit your needs.

    What software are you using? If you're using vBulletin there's a hack over at vBulletin.org that lets you add an IRC chat to your website that logs people in using their board ID.

    I started using it a few weeks ago and it's really nice.

    I did this with PHPBB.

    First, you must use the PHPBB registration page as the registration page for the whole site.

    Second, include this code at the top of every page on the site:

    <? define('IN_PHPBB', true);
    $phpbb_root_path = 'phpbb/';
    include($phpbb_root_path . 'extension.inc');
    include($phpbb_root_path . 'common.'.$phpEx);

    //
    // Start session management
    //
    $userdata = session_pagestart($user_ip, PAGE_INDEX);
    init_userprefs($userdata);
    //
    // End session management
    //
    //
    // Start output of page
    //
    $page_title = 'TITLE OF THE PAGE';
    include($phpbb_root_path . 'includes/page_header.'.$phpEx);

    ?>

    You must, of course, change the page title variable and the path to the PHPBB directory.

    Then, at any point in your scripts, you can call on $userdata[user_id] to get the user ID of the currently logged in user from PHPBB. $userdata[username] will give you their username.

    Look at my site for an example of how this works. If you need any more help getting your scripts to work with PHPBB, just reply here.

    Amorya, what is your website URL? I am very interested to see the result of your hack.. if it works, it could just be the solution I'm after for my site too.

    Has anybody done a similar hack using Invision Power Board??

    Obviously there's a lot more there than just the hack - the database has over 200 tables. But you can see the basics. If you register an account, you can then upload fiction, post comments, add links and more, and it all uses the one registration method provided by PHPBB.
