    Normal Computer Into Webserver

    Hi guys,

Been looking down the posts in this forum, and have got the impression that if you install Linux or Apache on your computer you can set up your own webserver? Doubt it would be as simple as that, but is this the basic thing what you do, or are there more complicated things?

Web servers are normal computers(usually "headless"(no monitor), though.)

Serving, on its own is fairly easy, but it gets complicated as far as security, DNS, getting bandwidth, etc,. Using a home computer as a public server isn't really a great idea for anyone who isn't familiar with system administration. On the other hand, many people run firewalled servers on their personal machine to develop on.

Yep, a server is a computer. There are some differences, like you need a nic in a server, not a modem. Servers often don't need things like cd rom drives, or floppy drives. They often come in 1U or 2U cases instead of towers. But, if you're not sending it to a data center, the case doesn't matter. If your computer can run the software that it needs to serve web pages, it can function as a web server. You'd probably want both Linux AND Apache, not or.
