How are BT & OFTEL holding back e-commerce in the UK?

Hi,
I have to write a 6-800 word essay about how BT & OFTEL are holding back e-commerce in the UK by not offering totally free internet access, as the US already have. Any comments you may have is much appreciated

Perhaps its because BT is made up of rich idiots who can't stand the thought of a salary drop???

Seriously, according to Computer Shopper (UK Edition), BT has just announced a flat-rate access deal:

pay £13.99 a month for completely free dialup,

pay £6.99 a month for off-peak weekday access,

and

pay £6.99 a month for free weekend access

I have searched with BT website but haven't been able to find any additional info.

I think you'll agree this is a good start, my phone bill for last quarter read £110 just for Net access!!! I'd much rather just pay the £40 ;-)

Thanks for that Daniel. I'll try and incorporate it in somehow! It seems good news that BT and OFTEL have finally recognised the need for free internet access in the UK. I just visited some nutters website while trying to locate info from Ask Jeeves and he seems to think that just because he wrote a couple of letters to OFTEL that they are going to take notice and tell BT to make it free! Yeah, right then!

Yes, well, perhaps it may happen some day...

I am still hoping eagerly for the time when us Brits are actually ahead of the Americans in this market... another couple of years, perhaps? :-)

bt are comming to Ireland if that helps at all, they are buying Esat Telecom or have bought it already, last news i heard was that they were buying it
