cell background image
Is there a secret to getting a cell background image to show up in Netscape 4.x? It looks fine in IE, but the cell color shows up instead of the image in Netscape.
Here's my CSS code:
I could be wrong, but I believe it is simply not supported by NS4.x
If you want it to appear in a netscrap 4 browser, you will have to code around the problem by assigning it to your <td> as a html background attribute.
It should work on NS4.x because mine does. But background-repeat doesn't. Then again, I didn't use background-color together with background-image together. Hmm.
I just read on another site, "This property does not work with hyperlinks, list items, definition lists, images, horizontal lines, tables, and form fields" in NS 4.0.
Grr... what good is something that can't be seen in tables?
Constantly frustrated with Netscape,
I have an outstanding remedy to Netscape's frustration... drop it altogether and code only for NS6 and DOM browsers.
If your clients still insist on supporting 4% of Web users usings obsolete technology, then live with it and offer a backwards-compatible product that will not last in upcoming brosers versions and platforms.
Convincing your customers can be done. I've just did it for an 80k dollar contract of ours and convinced them to drop NS4 for the benefit of forwards-compatibility.
Can you guys imagine how much fun I'm gonna have coding for DOM browsers only and being encouraged to do so?
Oh man, I'm having an emotion just thinking about it ;)
Thought I'd post my resolution in case anyone is encountering the same problem...
I discovered that Netscape will show background-image. I was using a linked style sheet and using relative paths for the images in the style sheet. IE looked for the image file relative to the style sheet, and Netscape looked for the image file relative to the HTML file. I resolved this problem by keeping the linked style sheet, but I removed the CSS code pertaining to the cells with background-imagess and insert it into the HTML file. Now it works in both browsers!
So it does work hu?
Guess I'll have to go back to my books and codes and check that out. ;)
