Is MyBB better than SMF?
I've not seen many posts making this comparision. But both seem to be the best free software out there. Most of the posts seem to be in favor of SMF. When i did a search on MyBB i only found 28 posts.
One user said: "I'm not going to argue this. Anybody who thinks that MyBB has all of the features that vB has is wrong. Like I said, MyBB is great, possibly the best free software out there, but it isnt anywhere close to vB as far as features go."
For the most part it seems I'm going with SMF since most people are familar with it. If i have time maybe I'll play with both.
Has anyone used both of these products? What are the pros and cons?
They have a pretty similar feature set according to forummatrix. One pro for SMF is that it tracks read posts in the database.
There are other factors though, like whether you are planning on integrating your forum with anything else, how easy it is to make custom themes, and how easy it is to make and use mods/patches.
Honestly, One place I think MyBB stands out in it's ability to function as a stadalone. It's pretty well rounded by default without a lot of futzing around.
I'm sure MyBB is an excellent piece of software, but I can personally vouch for SMF. We have been using SMF as the back-end for our CMS on one of our new projects.
