I've tried installing ruby on rails a number of times without success. I managed to install ruby easily, it's the rails part I'm having trouble with.
I'm on a Windows XP Pro OS.
RubyGems hangs while updating the source index.
I have a problem with RubyGems. It doesn’t matter what I try to install with, it freezez.
Particulary I tried to execute: gem install rails—include-dependencies
but the command freezez at the following message:
"Updating Gem source index for: http://gems.rubyforge.org"
The source index update takes a few minutes if you have a slow connection or if the server is down/overused.
Just wait a few minutes.
There is a download from RubyForge if rubygems doesn't work:
There is a conflict with windows firewalls and ruby socket code. If you have ZoneAlarm or something similar installed you need to completely uninstall it for the ruby socket code to work. Gems needs the sockets to communicate with the gem server. this will also affect ruby code that uses Net::HTTP or OpenUri.
It won't be enough to just turn of zonealarm you will have to completely uninstall it.
