I wish to put user pages on my website
www.gib-online.com
However, as the URLs will show I don't know what to name the directory
It will be something like this
www.gib-online.com/something/username
I have thought of a few but don't know which one to choose:
~profiles
~webs
~homes
~members
So if I chose profiles the URL for me would be:
www.gib-online.com/profiles/nicky
What do you guys think I should use?
Please help!
I think it depends on what the content is for the page. If it's just a profile for the user, then naming the directory 'profiles' would make sense. If it's going to contain other functionality or information specific to the user, something more general like 'members' would be better. Also, think about the future, and if it will have more than profile information at some point, plan ahead and name it 'members' to begin with. 'members' seems like the most popular and easy to remember name, judging by other sites that offer user pages.

The again, it is largely based upon the content of what you're hosting.
Next factor comes again, which would be the length of the url.
keep the word short. ( reason why most go for subdomains now )
you could have it as '-' for the folder name or something else...for a short folder name.
In all, I recommend 'web'

I'd go with 'web' or 'pages', short and to the point... I've also seen 'perso' (short for personal), but I never really liked that.
On the other hand 'public' might be another option. 'sites' too. I kind of like 'sites', the others might bring confusion as the whether the pages are yours or not, but 'sites' makes it very clear that they are not.

Once you've chosen a prefix you could go one step further and use a sub domain for member sites.
For example http://members.gib-online.com/membername. That way the member appears to have their own top level directory and if you wanted you could make http://members.gib-online.com into a whole sub-site showcasing member sites etc. Obviously the word member is interchangable here depending on what you're using it for, but it's an idea :)

I think the sub-domain idea is the best, but hey I had two people beat me to that idea ...heheheh :D :p
What are thoughts on style of subdomain I would have opted for membername.gib-online.com. Are there reasons to avoid this style and go with the members.gib-online.com/membername. Either name could be pointed towards say gib-online.com/members/membername and the first one would be shorter.Quote:

I have decided to go for members as i think ti builds up teh idea of a communty. ATM I only have one but when I get a few I will defintely set up the sub domains luckily my host gives me unlimited sub domains.
Is anyone else doing this on their site?
gthorley...the way a subdomain works is this:
You set up an extra bit in your config file for the server, one that recognizes the extra part of the domain name (ie, members.somedomain.com) and forwards the browser to that virtual directory. If you were to do it the way you suggested, then Nicky would have to add bits to the server every time she added a user. Do you see?
your way:
creole.gib-online.com forwards to /www/members/creole
a better way:
members.gib-online.com/creole forwards to /www/members/creole
The same end result, but you only have to add to the server config file once instead of every time.
If the host is giving unlimited subdomains what does Nicky have to do with the config. It would seem that either way Nicky has to create a folder for each subdomain user. If the host doesn't offer unlimited subdomains then couldn't you just create your own redirection of the subdomain by pointing your domain to an IP with mydomain.com and then creating subdomains as I suggested with them. I enquired of mydomain.com and they allow unlimited subdomains to be created and redirected.
Are you saying that when a host offers unlimited subdomains it is only as an alias that just directs to the main domain or are they offering to set up a redirection of each sub to a directory of your choice. I may have misunderstood what hosts are offering. If it is the former IMO it would have limited use.
I am in the process of developing a site where artists would have there own community page to display a limited amount of there work but to make it attractive to them I want them to be able to have say jdoe.ourartpage.com which they can use on busines cards promo material etc. This looks much better IMO than artists.ourartpage.com/jdoe.

it works like I explained before. If you have a subdomain set up for your members like so:
creole.gib-online.com/
then it would likely be just a pointer to this directory:
www/members/creole
That is the way it works (unless someone cares to prove me wrong). The reason why it would be better for her to do it like so:
members.gib-online.com
is that even though her host might offer unlimited subdomains, she would still have to request that they add one everytime someone joined her community. Whereas with the second option, it would take effect as soon as someone joined and their directory was created.

I'd just say the heck with it. If people ask you if they can put their site on your domain, just look very confused at them and say, "If only that technology existed." It seems to work when I do it.
