I am trying to get an idea of just what people set there screen resolution at.
I keep mine at 800x600 and large fonts. My eyes are weak and find this the best most of the time.
I am looking for what you the user of this forum maintains his/her screen resolution at for their
browsing, this may or may not be, what you are optimizing web sites for.

he wants to know the resolution we use, so that he may design sites for/at that resolution. hence the purpose in the web design forum.
one thing though that he's juz getting his statistics form the web development community, instead of the 'surfers?' or whatever you call them...end-user?

okie...yessh. coz majority of web developers have reoslutions at least 1 itmes above the average.
I would make sure you know which you're using. Studies have shown that developers tend to have larger monitors than the 'rest' of the population, and therefore we are not a good demographic to judge by. I would poll people on what screens they design for, which still (if i'm correct) rests at 800x600, last i checked.

This forum has over 4000 members and I would guess many still do lots of recreational surfing and I am not sure using 1024 res on a 17" monitor is condusive to this.

I am the 1% of the population who uses 640x480 :)

I design my sites for 800x600. Everyone who still uses 640x480 or below will just have to realize that it's time to upgrade (this includes you, Sherice). If they can't upgrade, well, they're a minority... :)

I'm jealous I can't read 1024x with small font without getting close to the screen and squinting.
At home: 800*600 (pc 1) and 640*480 (pc2)
At work: 1024*768 (pc1) and 640*480 (pc2)
I try to keep all sites viewable at all resolutions (or as close to viewable as possible), re: 640*480 being a minority, at work there are approx 180 workstations, all on 640*480, at my previous job, (large building society), over 4000 workstations, ALL at 640*480.....etc etc etc.
Discounting these users is development suicide (especially considering that in these situations it is IT depts and not the individuals that have control over screen resolution).
Font size - Browser default on all (how many end users actually even find this facilty?)

I used to use the default 800x600 that my computer came set to, but now I keep it on 1024x768 because it is much easier to use Dreamweaver and Fireworks in this resolution.
I don't understand that there are web desigers that use the 640x480 resolution. How can you use graphics and WYSIWYG (if you use them) programs in those resolutions??

I'm most comfortable with 800x600 on a 17" monitor which I use at home. I use 1024x780 at work just so I get the chance to see things in both those resolutions without going back and forth all the time on one computer, but it's a bit of a strain.
Lately, I design for what I call a "tight" 640x480 and up. Meaning that if it's a tiny bit wide for 640 I don't worry too much, but people shouldn't have to scroll horizontally more than a very little bit.
According to the stats on my various sites, 800x600 is still the one my visitors use most, but 1024x780 comes in a close second.
1280x1024x32 on a 17" DiamondTron monitor.
I have the keen eyes of a hawk who is currently using binoculars ;O)
do hawks go blind as well? ;)
i.e.: to have eysight as good as mine a hawk would need binoculars...

You get used to the tiny text after a while - it just doesn't seem tiny any more.
I only use it because I like to have multiple windows open - right now I have around 10 things in my task bar and my computer has only been on for an hour.

I also use 1600x1200 but on a 17" monitor. Its perfect when designing as I can have everything spread out nicely. I design for 800x600 though. I used 1204x768 for ages untill I just bought my new monitor. I expected more people here to use high resoltuions and was very suprised when Sparkie said she ran 640x480 :)
So you find this acceptable for surfing the net? Seems like a lot of sites would have as much white on each side as they do info in the middle. HMMM.Quote:

I design for 800x600 resolutions, and thus have my computer/monitor set to that resolution. It's the perfect size for 17" monitors.

A lot of the sites I do visit have a lot of white space round the side but I have gotten so used to it it doesn't really bother me. Also quite a few sites I visit are designed like CNET and will stretch to fill the browser width even on very high resolutions and I regularly visit some designzine type sites such as Surfstation.lu which are designing for very high resolutions anyway. I also doesn't have Internet Explorer maximized (I often have it a little over the width it would be at 800x600 but the length I would have it maximized at 1600x1200 that way I can read without scrolling too much) when browsing so it doesn't prove much of a problem. I find the benefits when designing much more than the negatives of having lots of white space round the site.
