Personal experience with Dreamweaver is that it's fine for uploading and downloading files. The only hurdle I've come across is when I was setting up CGI scripts and had to set permissions on some of the files. There's no way to do this in DW so I had to use CuteFTP.
For basic everyday uploading it's fine, Synchronise is actually a VERY useful function!

I personally have gotten into the habit of using an old FTP editor - WS_FTP95. I've used CuteFTP briefly - it was more Windows-like than WS_FTP, and fit in well in that respect.
I also hear AceFTP is good, but have not used that one personally.
I second CuteFTP. It's by far the best FTP program out there.
I use LeapFTP for uploading since I started my first site. I've always used it since that time and wouldn't want to use anything else. Although LeapFTP is quite basic, it's stable and reliable.
I don't use DW's built in clinet, I recommand BPFTP or FlashFXP
I agree, CuteFTP is excellent, except my ad-based version ran out and won't work anymore. Like Chris, I use WS_FTP.Quote:

I use - WS_FTP95 but that is because I am used to it as it is the one we have at university!
WS_FTP is recommended and can be downloaded at http://www.download.com
WS_FTP is definitely great... small (in size), and a lot of functionality, PLUS it's easy to use :) I don't like Cute too much. I dunno why... :(
I do suggest everyone gets hold of the beta version of cuteftp pro...looks very impressive best of all its free, and it also seems rather stable.
Worth a look IMHO
I would have to agree with Robo, I'm still using the old version of BPFTP(Bulletproof FTP), since I heard the new versions are getting bloated. It has everything you would want and need, and its the most stable out of that WS FTP and CUTE FTP(atleast on my pc), plus its quick, and always reliable. :)
I am also using WS_FTP. Cute FTP tries to be too user friendly, and makes it harder for more advanced users to get what they want, in my opinion anyway. I haven't checked out any of the newer versions.
For advanced features, looks and customisation, get FlashFXP
CuteFTP Pro Beta 1.0 is very attractive. If you include tree directpry listing, I would purchase it right awya and use it for good. =)
LeapFTP and AceFTP are excellent too. WS FTP Pro is simply too basic. All the new versions never include any new features. Its stagnant and the fact that its the Oldest( thats what all program archive sites say ) ftp program doens't mean its the best.
