Forum posting best part of seo and also helpful to increase website traffic and back links, but you need to use high quality forums.
If you're helping answer questions and being a productive member of your particular niche community then I believe it helps ranking. whether it's the flow on from people visiting your site or even developing long term relationships with people in your niche
Agree. spaming will get you slapped.
Those can help drive traffic to your website, but they are unlikely to have much of a direct impact on your ranking. Yes, you might start to pick up a few links as those people you have built a relationship with on the forums start to refer to your site elsewhere ... but that's unlikely to be a big deal. With most forums being 'nofollow' and search engines not measuring traffic to a site, while you will be grateful for the extra traffic don't think it's going to transform into improved rankings, especially not in a hurry.

It may help if you get dofollow backlins from it and if you have chosen a relevant niche. But if you use a spammed irrelevant niche, you can spoil everything. I work for <snip> and we still use. Of course, you should carefully pick up forums in order to improve link juice.
