Jpeg-optimizers are better than Photoshop?

hey everbody,

just a question here on something our teacher says in school: according to him, stand-alone jpeg optimizers and even fireworks do a better job at optimizing JPEGs (and GIFs) than Photoshop or Imageready.

Personally, I have not made this observation, but would be quite interested to see what you all have to say on this matter...

There is some argument that Fireworks does a better job of optimisation than PhotoShop, so I suppose that the argument that a standalone optimiser may perform better (depending of course on which one).

Having said that, the argument goes back to fw3/4 and ps5.5/6, so I really have no idea if it still holds true today. I used to find that FW did slightly better "squeezing", but now tend to use whatever I'm in (which is more frequently PS)...
