Corel, the makers of Painter, CorelDraw and Paintshop Pro have released a new app for the iPad called Paint It! Show. The app is basically a slideshow of your photographs but it uses realistic painting filters similar to Painter’s Auto painting feature to produce digital works of art from your pics.
If you’ve used Painter before you’ll know that the painting effects achievable are quite amazing. Unfortunately with this app, unlike the ArtRage, Sketchbook Pro or Brushes apps, you don’t actually paint the pictures yourself, so it’s ideal for the ahem, lazier digital artist amongst us.
There are five different painting effects which you can apply to your photographs during the slideshow. These include “oil,” “impressionist,” “modern,” “pen and ink,” and “illustration.” Or if you’d like a surprise you can choose to randomly apply a style to each photo as it appears in the slideshow. You can add any music that you have on your iPad to complete your slideshow.
Having seen the app in action briefly, it’s fair to say that it does a nice job on some images but others still have that obviously filtered look about them. I think it needs a little more work but for 79 cents (Euro), 99 cents (US) or 59p (UK) it’s pretty cheap if you like to apply painterly affects to your images and use your expensive iPad as a digital picture frame. In the future it would be really nice to see a Painter “Lite” type application where you could apply your own brushwork from Corel, but that’s another days work.
In terms of sharing, you can put your painted pictures up on Facebook or send an email to a friend. There is no Twitter integration.
Here’s a video of the app in action. And you can buy it here.
