SEO is work you do now for benefits in the future, usually far in the future. Direct response advertising is immediate. Buy clicks from a search engine, put banners on relevant websites, buy an ad in a trade magazine, call prospective customers, etc.
Lots of people are now using social media sites so I think social media is one way to increase more traffic to your site like facebook, twitter and youtube.
Traffic is not pulled overnight!

Guest posting works for me. With keyword country as my loyal partner, I am able to find niche related blogs to guest post on. 
You can go for PPC as well if traffic is what you require. PPC totally depends on how much money you invest. With a bigger investment, you can see results within 48 hrs.
I would suggest you to go for organic way! since your ads are going to suffer in case you go short of funds.
It depends what your aim is.
If you want to drive traffic to your site in order to sell a product or service, or to generate leads, then pay-per-click advertising might be a good way to go. But you need to satisfy yourself that you will recoup your costs.
On the other hand, that woulnd’t be a sensible option if you want to promote a hobby or personal site. In that case, you need to concentrate on building interesting and original content, and telling as many people as possible about it (but in an non-spammy way). But it will take time.

PPC is the way to go for immediate traffic, and there are many options for this…but do some research and know what you’re doing. You can lose a lot of money on unqualified leads that don’t produce ROI if you’re not careful.
AdWords, Facebook ads, and if you’re an online retailer you can look at shopping.com, shopzilla, bizrate, and others.

SEO is a process where it takes time to increase your visitors. For gaining the immediate traffic at your website, you must do a PPC (pay per click) campaign. PPC will help you to gain a more visitors in a short period of time. You can also do Social media Optimization activities.
Also, merely increasing your traffic isn’t necessarily a goal in itself. If the purpose of your site is to sell something, then you might be better off putting your efforts into improving your conversions.
Again, it comes down to what your overall goal is.
