Simply Rails 2

Here is what our customers are saying about this product.

"Very good text. However, it is somewhat dated. I think this would be a great prospect for an updated edition that references newer versions of Rails and of a different/newer automated installer."

"Having work my way through this book I have to say its excellent at teaching the fundamentals.

"Some minor changes with the new versions of Rails around but the forum sorted out most of them.

"Really enjoyed it.

"Peter."

"Solid introduction to Rails. Good information for noons including a good discussion of object-oriented programing."

Jason Bock 4.5 stars, 15 Jan 2012

"Awesome book. I'm an Electronic Engineer with only embedded C coding experience but it is very readable and perfect pace and style - lots of examples and things to do. My only complain is that is has not been updated to the most recent version of rails. This would make this the best learning book EVE!"

Joe Synnott 4 stars, 30 Sep 2011

"The book is easy to read.. Sometime too simple for an experienced programmer, but should suit a wide audience.
Technically, I am having some problems because ruby, gem and rails are a lot farther than the version the book covers. Seems some macro's are different in ruby 1.9.1 than they were in the 1.8.6+ versions - and some gem packages, notably mongrel - don't install properly.
Again, these are technical problems any book will have when version change - however, it makes it much more difficult to get started with something new like Rails.
Just be prepared to work on a PC/Mac rather than a Linux/UNIX platform. There seems to be more support for those forums. And be sure to visit the irc forums he mentions - they people reply and help get problems solved.

"p.s. - I'll probably write a second, or update this one, once I get farther than just installing Rails."

"Ideal intro to Rails. I changed my hosting provider to one which supports Rails and have not looked back."

Adrian Evans 5 stars, 25 Sep 2008

"I have been searching for months for a good Rails 2 book, and, at last, I think I have found it. It doesn't start with a 100 page tutorial, but actually takes the time to coherently explain the underlying structure. The diagrams are great -- if anything, the book could use more, e.g., showing the tie between controller actions and views.

"If I were to teach a course in Rails -- and I very well might -- this would be the book I'd pick."

Michael Rogers 5 stars, 8 Jul 2008

"I've been an admirer of the Rails framework for quite a while, but I never really got around to learning how to use it. A few days ago I finally decided to take the plunge. I needed a book.
Simply Rails 2 is at the time of writing the only book for beginners written with Rails 2.x in mind, so the choice was simple.
I'm very impressed with both the writing and examples in the book. In just two days my understanding of Ruby on Rails has improved a lot, and I already feel like I'm ready to start playing around on my own.
If you're new to Rails, this book is a great introduction. Throughout the whole book you'll be working on one example app. Watching "my" application as it started to blossom was very enjoyable."

H. Lindset 5 stars, 26 Jun 2008

"I've read quiet a few book on this topic and I believe Patrick's book is by far the best, particularly for starters or novices. Writing style has flow, sentence structure is direct and font is reader friendly.

"For some reason, particularly for a new reader, the layout or heading style might be confusing.

"Overall, a must read for a anyone interested in Ruby on Rails."

"Excellent book to get you started with Ruby and Rails. Easy to read and follow. Had a few problems installing mySQL on OS X Leopard when following the step by step install. That section could use an update. Overall I highly recommend this book as your first step in getting up to speed with Rails."

"This was a fabulous book!. Thank you for writing, "Build Your Own Ruby On RailsWeb Applications." I especially appreciated the attention to test driven development and the comprehensive landscape approach to rails with intermediate level depth on each topic."
